This month, we’re celebrating 80 years of Audicles!  

Our company was founded in 1944 by hearing aid dispenser Mr. Arthur Small in downtown San Antonio. Back then, we were known as Sonotone, a franchise office, as audiologists weren’t allowed to dispense hearing aids.  

In 1971, Mr. Small’s daughter, Carrol Green, joined the team, leaving her career as a teacher to become a Hearing Instrument Specialist and follow in her father’s footsteps. Eventually, she took over the company after its rebranding to Audicles. The year 1982 brought Audicles our first staff audiologist, Jane Watson, and in 2004, Dr. Tracy Board joined the team as our pediatric specialist.  

Since then, we’ve continued to fulfill Mr. Small’s initial mission: providing patient-centered care of the utmost excellence for individuals with hearing loss in Central and South Texas.  

Over the past 80 years, we’ve seen thousands of patients come through our doors in search of help for their hearing loss challenges. Whether they visit us for their first comprehensive hearing assessment or their latest, we make sure that every patient who visits us leaves with a smile on their face. 

Plenty of people come into our office looking skeptical that hearing care could be what they need to improve their lives. After their first appointment with us, we watch those same people leave feeling more confident and reassured that they made the right choice for their holistic health. 

Hearing care is often attached to negative connotations around getting older, but we know that’s simply not the case anymore. Advanced hearing aid technology has come so far—we’ve seen it for ourselves as devices have become more powerful and more discreet as the years have flown by!
