What Are the Treatments for Hearing Loss?

Mar 15, 2020

When patients experience a hearing loss, they often think there’s just one solution – hearing aids. In fact, there are a variety of different ways that they can gain effective treatment. This will often depend on the severity of a diagnosis, along with each patient’s individual choices. We’ve created an introduction to Audicles’ treatments, so you can find out more before visiting us.

Hearing Evaluations

All treatments begin with a full evaluation, led by an audiologist. This will allow them to determine exactly what kind of hearing loss you are exhibiting. During initial tests, audiologists will ask you to listen to a recording of sounds at different volumes. This is so they can judge how your responses compare with others who have perfect hearing. Next, they’ll look inside your ear to examine whether there are any obvious issues. In particular, they’ll analyze whether you have issues with your middle ear or a perforated eardrum. Doctors then spend time discussing what might have caused your hearing loss and how your lifestyle choices may impact it now and in the future.

Ear Cleaning

Sometimes patients don’t need any advanced hearing care treatment but simply require their ears to be properly cleaned by a professional. Wax build-up isn’t an uncommon problem, and doctors can treat this immediately without the need for patients to book another appointment. Once this relatively quick procedure is completed, patients regularly see dramatic differences in their hearing.

Referral to ENT Physicians

Owing to the specific climate of Central Texas, there are a lot of people that suffer from allergies and sinus problems. Doctors find that those with a sensitivity to these conditions often develop issues with their middle ear, such as infections or fluid build-up, impairing their hearing.

In these cases, audiologists make referrals to ear, nose, and throat doctors who can administer different forms of medical or physical treatment, often curing them.

Hearing Aids

Other types of hearing loss result from damage to a person’s inner ear or auditory nerves. This cannot be treated with medical procedures and instead requires hearing aids. Modern hearing aids aren’t like the bulky items produced in the 50s and 60s, but they are sleek, discrete, and hyper-advanced devices, sometimes almost invisible. Doctors take time to address patients’ preferences, so they get the right equipment to treat their conditions at a price point that makes sense.

Cochlear Implants

Our doctors make referrals for those with the most severe forms of hearing loss to audiologists dealing in cochlear implants. These are devices placed inside a person’s ear, during a surgical procedure, giving them an enhanced level of hearing sensitivity. With this treatment, those who wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity to hear can, once again, connect with the world around them.

If someone won’t benefit from hearing aids, there are so many other options to choose from. Why not contact us and request a callback today, so you can find out what your best solution could be?
