I’m excited to share that I was recently featured on the popular daytime talk show Great Day SA.
It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about something that I’m passionate about—hearing health and its surprising connection with dementia.
This information could help a lot of people, so getting the chance to reach a wider audience meant a lot to me and our team.
During my conversation on the show, I had the chance to delve into my work as an audiologist specializing in hearing imbalance.
As you probably know, at Audicles Hearing Services we diagnose and treat hearing loss with a keen focus on hearing aids, and we’re proud to provide care for people of all age groups, from infancy to the elderly.
While on Great Day SA, I also had the opportunity to highlight our fantastic team of skilled audiologists who work tirelessly to serve our communities.
One key point of our discussion was the powerful research surrounding hearing loss and dementia. I shared insights from a landmark study published by The Lancet, which identified hearing loss as the most common and modifiable risk factor for dementia.
The study showed that mild hearing loss doubles one’s chance of developing dementia, and severe hearing loss increases this risk fivefold.
But here’s the good news—by treating hearing loss effectively, we can slow down memory decline and potentially prevent one in 10 cases of dementia.
As the topic moved towards hearing aids, I explained the differences between prescription and over-the-counter hearing aids. Prescription hearing aids are custom-tailored to a person’s specific needs and are fine-tuned over time as per the individual’s lifestyle and evolving needs.
On the other hand, over-the-counter hearing aids are often a one-size-fits-all solution. While they can provide situational relief, I expressed my concern about the lack of professional testing that often accompanies the purchase of these devices.
